On Setsubun , the day before Risshun the first day of spring, exorcism rites are held to welcome the New Year. The observance has its origins in 706 when the Emperor Mommu adopted a Chinese ceremony to drive out evil spirits which had been causing a plague.

People who are born in the year of the wild boar participate in a Setsubun ritual at Kami Goryo Shrine, which involves throwing roasted beans to the worshippers.
